A new beginning for The Gardens School community

Site works starting on The Garden’s new primary school in Manurewa marked an exciting new beginning for the community who put up with a leaky school for over 12 years.

Demolition of the original buildings was completed in August 2015 and earth works began on site in July 16. These are now complete, the foundations are in their final stages and the Arrow construction team are currently working on building the main structure of a three level teaching block.

The construction team are working within a live school environment with close neighbours and staff and students operating from prefabricated buildings that sit close by on the sports field.

Staff have encouraged students to take an interest in the build by erecting a viewing platform in the corner of the field that incorporates QR Codes the students can scan to find out what’s happening on site. A CCTV camera has also been installed so the school can create a time-lapse video.

“Keeping good public separation in place is important” says Sam Gordon, Arrow’s Project Manager. “But it’s also great to get the kids involved. The viewing platform is often full of little faces if something like a digger comes to site and in the future we will arrange site visits to maintain their interest”.

The final 4,500 m² building will contain three levels of ‘innovative learning environments’ – the Ministry of Educations terminology for a learning environment that includes the physical, social, and pedagogical context in which learning occurs. An innovative environment supports strengths-based teaching and learning. It offers students and teachers flexibility, agency, ubiquity, and connectedness.

The building is made up of a mixture of precast concrete walls, floors and columns along with structural steel beams that span the width of the building to create large open spaces underneath.

Once the building is operational work will continue by demolishing another building on site and constructing new hard courts and landscape areas.

Arrow has worked very closely with the design team at MOAA Architects though the shop drawing phase of the project to ensure miniscule details on the prefabricated components were accurate.

The project will be completed towards the end of 2017.
