ABB sought a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility to house their 125 employees and service their global clients, including Samsung, Hynix and Texas Instruments. Arrow were engaged to design and construct the new 6,500m² building that houses research and development, global sales and manufacturing under one roof. As the first occupant of the new Hawke’s Bay Airport Business park, ABB had the advantage of selecting their preferred site and optimal site configuration.
A key driver for the design was the integration of the office space into the portal frame form, that encloses the factory and warehouse. This decision was driven by both economy and speed of construction – allowing the office envelope to be constructed efficiently as part of the main build.
Material selection was guided by the coastal/high wind location of the airport site combined with the need for a robust, low maintenance building. Precast concrete and prefinished metal cladding were utilised for the main structure. Exterior finishes had to comply with the restrictions of the materials palette set by the HBAL design guidelines and the strong corporate standards set by ABB globally.
